Overview

Elsword is a free-to-play, fantasy themed MMORPG. Like its better known peer, MapleStory, the player traverses a two dimensional world through side scroll navigation and fights in real time. Elsword supports both cooperative and solo gameplay, though soloing through an MMO is, more often than not, a less than satisfactory experience.

Unlike many MMORPGs, the gameplay in Elsword is almost entirely driven by the game’s plotline. The story follows a group of heroes who set out to save their world by finding the mystical El Stone, the disappearance of which has caused the fabric of reality to come apart.

Gameplay

As mentioned previously, story and gameplay are closely tied in Elsword. As the player makes choices for his character, new facts are revealed about his past and new possibilities are opened for his future. The player faces the first of these choices when prompted to choose a character. All subsequent decisions concern specific job/class specialization.

The bulk of the game will be familiar to those who frequent MMORPGs. The player travels, vanquishes enemies, and levels up. This is done while exploring the world and gaining access to the game’s eight main areas and their corresponding towns.

These towns serve as hubs where the entire player community can interact simultaneously. Here, players are given quests, purchase items, and engage in commerce with other players. Also associated with each hub are six dungeons. In order to facilitate smoother and more personal gameplay, these dungeons are interacted with as instances, allowing parties of up to four players.

Elsword includes player vs. player combat in the form of arena battles. Each arena holds up to eight players who can either engage in free for all battles or team battles of 4 vs. 4 and 3 vs. 3. These battles can be useful in determining one’s progress relative to the community at large, but are limited and overshadowed by the rest of the game at large.
